THE WOMEN’S RESEARCH GROUP
The Women’s Research Group was set up in 1998 and initially connected to Coventry University, whose staff gave us a lot of support and encouragement. Members thought that women’s history in Coventry had been neglected and its aim was to give the subject more prominence. Our ambition was to produce a book within a year containing profiles of women who had made a contribution to the history of Coventry in the twentieth century.
At first we tried to target women who were the first to hold a particular office or job normally exclusively male. They included Alice Arnold, the first woman Mayor; Pearl Hyde, the first woman Lord Mayor; Lily Stevenson, the first woman to be made a freeman in modern times; and Joyce Ford, the first woman Superintendent Registrar.
Since that first book, Redressing the Balance, which was published in 1999 the group has produced nine more books continuing the work of researching and recording the lives of women in Coventry, the latest being Sent to Coventry published in 2016.
We give FREE TALKS about our books. More information can be found here.
