Going to Town
This book features a selection of old shops in Coventry that will bring back many memories to those who remember the city both before the war and after its reconstruction. Most of them no longer exist, including Anslow’s, Hogarth’s, Fishy Moores, Patrick’s, Owen Owen and Tuck and Blakemore. A few have survived, like the Co-op, but in a very different form.
This book recalls a time when most shops were independently owned and customers felt a personal loyalty for the service they received. During the post-war years new businesses were created in the reconstructed city centre. Opened with such enthusiasm and supported by the local population who began to earn more money in the factories and offices. The shops are now gone and the centre of the city looks run down. This book is a real nostalgia trip.
