Leisure and Pleasure (A medley of spare time pursuits)
This book features varied articles about how women used there leisure time, from the popular pastimes of dancing, theatre and cinema-going, to groups such as the Girl Guides, the Women’s Institute and the League of Health and Beauty. There are also accounts of women who worked in the leisure industry, from a wardrobe mistress to Danny la Rue to a member of the Harmony Hussars, an all-women accordion band between the wars.
Coventry boasted a host of large, well-appointed ballrooms, both before and after the war, from factory-based venues, such as the GEC, Courtaulds and Matrix to the Rialto, Neale’s and Centre Ballroom. In the post war period the Locarno, the Majestic, which then became the Orchid and the Police Ballroom were all very popular. Also read about the local amateur dramatic groups as well as the professional theatres.
